The Ultimate Wax Melt Guide: Everything You Need to Know

10 March 2026

Wax melts are one of the most versatile, affordable, and long-lasting ways to fragrance your home. If you're new to them, this guide covers everything — what they are, how to use them, and how to get the most out of every piece.

What Are Wax Melts?

Wax melts are small pieces of fragranced wax — no wick, no flame on the wax itself. Instead, you place them in a burner (either tealight-powered or electric) that gently heats the wax, releasing fragrance into the room. Think of them as candles without the jar — all scent, no soot.

Our 6-in-1 Clam Shell Melt Packs contain approximately 80 grams of wax in six individual pieces, providing 60+ hours of fragrance from a single pack.

Tealight Burner vs Electric Warmer

There are two main ways to use wax melts:

Tealight burnersuse a small tealight candle underneath a dish. The flame heats the dish, which melts the wax above. These are the most popular option and produce a slightly stronger scent throw because the wax reaches a higher temperature. They also create lovely ambient light. The downside: you're still using an open flame, so the same safety rules as candles apply.

Electric warmersuse a low-wattage bulb or heating plate to melt the wax. No flame at all, making them safer for bedrooms, offices, and homes with pets or children. The scent throw is slightly gentler but more consistent. They're also ideal for use overnight.

How to Use Wax Melts

  1. Place 1-2 pieces of wax melt in the dish of your burner
  2. If using a tealight burner, light a tealight underneath. If electric, switch on.
  3. The wax will begin to melt within minutes and release fragrance
  4. When you're done, extinguish the tealight or switch off the warmer
  5. The wax will solidify as it cools and can be reused until the scent fades

How Long Do Wax Melts Last?

Each piece of wax melt can typically be reused 3-5 times before the fragrance fades. You'll know it's time to change when the melted wax no longer releases any noticeable scent. Our 6-in-1 packs provide approximately 60+ hours of total fragrance — making them one of the best value-per-hour options in home fragrance.

How to Change the Wax

When your wax melt has lost its scent, you have a few options:

  • Pop-out method: Let the wax fully harden, then light a tealight for 30 seconds. The bottom of the wax will soften slightly, and you can pop the disc out in one piece.
  • Cotton ball method: While the wax is still liquid, drop in a cotton ball to absorb the wax, then dispose of it.
  • Freeze method: Place the burner dish in the freezer for 15 minutes. The wax will shrink and pop out cleanly.

Never pour liquid wax down the drain — it will solidify and cause blockages.

Wax Melts vs Candles: Which Is Better?

Neither is “better” — they serve different needs:

Many of our customers use both — candles in the living room for ambience, wax melts in the bedroom for a flameless option.

Safety Tips

  • Never add water to your burner
  • Don't overfill the dish — 1-2 pieces is plenty
  • Keep tealight burners away from children, pets, and draughts
  • Use unscented tealights in your burner to avoid competing fragrances
  • Place burner on a stable, heat-resistant surface
